Doulas can work full-time or part-time, depending on your needs. Some mothers find that they only want one for the birth itself, while others have one for months. Doulas typically earn around £10-12 an hour with a flat fee of £250-400 for attending a birth. British Doulas is the only agency in Britain that offers a comprehensive doula service. We charge a weekly fee of £50 + VAT per week for the first 2 weeks, reduced to £40 + VAT for each subsequent week.
All British Doulas' ladies have been through the course run by British Doulas, have been interviewed by us and have had at least two references checked by us. Each Doula has a police check.

A doula will usually be someone who lives fairly close to you as she will work for you part-time and will not want to travel too far. When you are interviewing doulas the first and most important thing is that you feel comfortable and happy with her. She needs to be your sort of person - someone you can confide in, rely on and feel happy to have around at your most vulnerable time. So when you meet her for the first time trust your gut. If you don't feel quite happy about her being around then cut the interview short and see someone else.
