DOULA TRAINING British Doulas runs a five-day training course in London at regular intervals through the year. It is taught by Midwifery trainers, practicing doulas and medical professionals. We are particularly keen to introduce more doulas in the birthing room. We want to reverse the trend of forcing fathers to be with the mother during the birth. In some cases it is not helpful to have the father around, especially if he gets very distressed, as this will affect the mother's emotional balance which, in turn, can be harmful to the birth and possibly even the relationship between mother and father. Of course, this is not the case with all fathers - in many cases it can help to cement the bond between partners, and doulas often work well having a father in the birthing room as well. We believe that having a doula in the birthing room with the mother means that the woman giving birth has the comfort and security of an experienced mother with her who can help her be calm and, therefore, make the birth quicker, less painful and more natural. The role of the post-birth doula is also being increasingly recognised by medical professionals, health visitors and government departments as it has been found that many mothers are left completely without help after the birth and desperately need the comfort, support and help that a doula can offer. It has also been found that if a mother is helped to mother properly in just the first few weeks of a child's life it can positively affect that child's health, emotional stability and intellectual ability in later years. If you are interested in becoming a doula yourself and would like to receive an information pack about the course do contact us on 020 7244 6053 or fill in this form and email it to us. |
