Doulas are a very new concept in this country although they have been around for some time in the United States.

Mother's Help pictureThey have been through the experiences that you have faced or will face. They’re like a substitute mum or sister – an experienced and comforting female presence who can help and support you before, during and after you give birth.

Doulas can attend a birth holding the mother's hand and helping her through the experience, and they can also help the mother after the birth, looking after her needs and giving advice and practical help with the baby.

Scientific research has shown that the presence of a doula in the birthing room makes the experience significantly safer, happier and less painful. Research has also shown that having a doula to help in the first few months of a baby's life helps the mother be a better parent and makes the child healthier, more stable and quicker to learn.
