What is a doula?Doulas are almost always mothers themselves and so they have been through the experiences of pregnancy, birth and caring for a baby. They’re like a substitute mum or sister – an experienced and comforting female presence who can help and support you before, during and after you give birth.Doulas can attend a birth holding the mother's hand and helping her through the experience, and they can also help the mother after the birth, looking after her needs and giving advice and practical help with the baby. Research has shown that the presence of a doula in the birthing room makes the experience significantly safer, happier and less painful, plus having a doula to help in the first few months of a baby's life helps the mother be a better parent and makes the child healthier, more stable and quicker to learn. |
British Doulas runs a five-day training course in London at regular intervals through the year, led by Midwifery trainers, practicing doulas and medical professionals. We are particularly keen to introduce more doulas in the birthing room as we believe that having a doula present during the birth with the mother means that the woman giving birth has the comfort and security of an experienced mother with her who can help her be calm and, therefore, make the birth quicker, less painful and more natural.
The role of the post-birth doula is also being increasingly recognised by medical professionals, health visitors and government departments as it has been found that many mothers are left completely without help after the birth and desperately need the comfort, support and help that a doula can offer. It has also been found that if a mother is helped to mother properly in just the first few weeks of a child's life it can positively affect that child's health, emotional stability and intellectual ability in later years.
More about maternity nursesMost maternity nurses are interested in babies only and will expect to work for you for just a couple of months after you have given birth. They are generally highly-trained and have a particular love and understanding of babies and for this you pay between £450-700 a week. However, you do get a lot of work for your money. Maternity nurses work a six-day week of 24-hour days!Maternity nurses are particularly useful if you have had a difficult birth or if it is your first child as they can teach you a great deal in a short time and will set a routine for the baby which will make your life much easier in the months following. However, they are very much baby-centred rather than mother-centred. If you would prefer a helper who cares for you so that you can concentrate on the baby, you should consider hiring a doula. |
